The New Year is upon us!
Does this sound familiar?
New Years Resolution:
“I am going to workout every day! I’m going to eat healthily! I’m not going to give up this time, I’m committed!”
Often we set lofty unattainable fitness goals with the best of intentions only to work hard for a few weeks. After that, the frustration sets in. While working out every day may sound like a good idea, it can actually be hard on your body. Plus it’s not always easy to fit a daily workout routine into your busy life. The reason you probably weren’t working out in the first place had something to do with where to fit a workout into your day!
Another surefire way to fail is to dive headlong into a high impact workout, or an intense cardio routine that burns you out. You are not going to go from zero to hero in one day! Your body hurts, it’s mad at you, and your brain isn’t helping with all the “Why are your doing this to me? We like pizza, we like watching Netflix, you know you can wear yoga pants and not workout right?”
Physical Therapy and Diet
At Human Function we spend a lot of time teaching our clients the benefit of a “Low Glycemic” diet and introduce them to our LEVO program which is a low impact high results 2-3 time a week program that gets you on the right track fast. Our clients feel so good so quickly that they avoid the negative self-talk, and don’t drop out after just a few short weeks. But that’s not really what this blog post is about. I want to give you some immediate tricks and tools to improve your chances of success without stressing you or your body out!
So let’s start with something simple that can change your life and your attitude. Walking. I know, I know! You’ve heard this your whole life right? But bare with me. Here are some benefits:
- Strengthens your heart
- Lowers risk of disease
- Keeps weight in check
- It can help prevent dementia
- Osteoporosis too
- It boosts your vitamin D levels
- Gives you energy
- lifts your mood
- It tones your legs, bum, and tum!
Sound pretty good right? 3o little minutes a day to start? Walking is a powerful tool on your road to health and wellness. But it’s not just walking… It’s HOW you walk that matters too!
Physical Therapy and Exercise
A recent study followed two groups of people and had them change their “gaits” The first group was told to walk with a slumped posture with their shoulders hanging and very little arm swing. (sad walk) The second group was told to walk with a bounce and a full arm swing. (happy walk) They then had each group take a memory test. The test consisted of lists of words, both negative and positive. After taking the test, the first group of “sad” walkers remembered significantly more negative words than the group of “happy” walkers did!
This memory bias is important because it plays a big role in establishing and maintaining depressive conditions. Depressed people tend to remember negative events and focus more on them which can create a bad mood. The researchers believe that changing postures or movement patterns can actually influence the way you process information!
So if you are looking for a quick way to boost your mood and improve your overall health, start with a good solid walk!
You’ve got this! This is easy! Right?! And the only thing it’s going to cost you is a good pair of walking shoes! I know you overspent for the holidays just like everyone else right? So here I am not only giving you solid advice but saving you time and money! 😉
